Impressions

Unfired red clay, ink jet prints, and text messages

Clay is able to conjure the memory of a physical form through the imprints that remain in it. Similar to a body, it responds to expression of feeling and can visually and physically memorialize expressions. For this project, I asked a couple close friends to channel their present emotions or thoughts and squeeze it into small lumps of clay. The imprints their palms and fingers made, and the objects that remain, invite a ghostly presence of their hands and their person. I asked them to text me what was on their minds, and the capitalization and punctuation in their responses add another layer to interpreting and seeing their feelings.
